Fashion takes over the city during NYFW but much of it remains behind closed doors. Meanwhile, millions of New Yorkers are already creating fashion every day through what they wear and how they move through the city.

We ask:

Where does fashion happen? On the runway? Or outside with people?

In response, we make that contradiction visible through a public installation: a monolith under constant transformation. A symbol of singular authority becomes a surface for collective expression. Rather than presenting an image, it reflects one. The monolith is continually “getting dressed” by the people who encounter it.

Fashion is a culture shared by all, and it should be shaped by people, aesthetics, and collective interpretations.

The installation is an attempt to place fashion OUTSIDE of closed doors, as the most interesting thing happening during Fashion Week may not be behind a closed door at all.

Fashion is already everywhere.

About the Artist

Charlotte Fei is a sculptor and installation artist based in New York. Her work aims to make visible the systems, extractions, and inheritances that any single form is quietly standing on, and asks what changes when we recognize that nothing, including ourselves, stands alone.
