Vivienne Tam

Vivienne Tam is an international fashion house known for its "East-meets-West" aesthetic. The brand integrates traditional Chinese motifs, such as flora and calligraphy, into contemporary Western silhouettes. It represents a globalist ethos that emphasizes cultural heritage through modern craftsmanship and colorful, print-heavy designs.

Fashion History

Designer Vivienne Tam established her namesake label in New York City in 1994. The brand gained significant cultural recognition with the 1995 "Mao" collection, which utilized pop-art imagery of the Chinese leader. This work, along with the 1997 "Buddha" collection, solidified the brand's role in fashion history as an early practitioner of cross-cultural dialogue. Pieces from these collections are held in permanent archives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
