Tricot is a sub-label of the Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons. It emphasizes knitwear and textile experimentation within a feminine, avant-garde framework. The brand represents a subculture of intellectual dressing, prioritizing texture, volume, and deconstruction over traditional silhouettes and mainstream trends.
History
Launched in 1981 by Rei Kawakubo, Tricot was established to explore the possibilities of knitwear. Junya Watanabe took over design duties in 1987, followed by Tao Kurihara in 2002. The label transitioned from a focus on basic knits to complex, artisanal garments. It holds significance in fashion history for bridging the gap between ready-to-wear and conceptual art, influencing the evolution of the Japanese avant-garde aesthetic through its distinct use of fabric manipulation.
