Original Penguin
Original Penguin is an American clothing brand specializing in mid-century inspired sportswear. Its aesthetic combines classic preppy elements with a retro, casual sensibility. The brand represents a heritage-focused ethos, drawing from 1950s leisure culture and later influencing modern indie and mod-inspired fashion subcultures.
Fashion History
Abbot Pederson founded the brand in 1955 under Munsingwear after purchasing a taxidermy penguin. The company introduced the first golf shirt featuring an embroidered logo, which became a staple of mid-century American leisurewear. Figures such as Frank Sinatra and Clint Eastwood popularized the apparel. While the brand faded in the late 20th century, it was relaunched in 2003, maintaining its historical association with vintage athletic styles and suburban Americana.
