Movado

Movado is a Swiss watchmaker defined by a minimalist, modernist aesthetic. The brand represents a mid-century design ethos rooted in the Bauhaus movement. Its core identity centers on the Museum Watch, featuring a single dot at twelve o'clock to symbolize the sun at high noon.

History

Founded in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Movado initially operated as a small workshop. The brand gained cultural recognition in 1947 when artist Nathan George Horwitt designed the minimalist Museum Watch dial. In 1960, this design became the first watch face inducted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. This event established Movado's presence within the intersection of industrial horology and modern art history.
