History

Dick Hayne founded Free People in 1970 in West Philadelphia. The store originally provided a community-focused retail space before being renamed Urban Outfitters. In 1984, the company revived the Free People name as a wholesale line to distinguish its more feminine, bohemian designs from its other holdings. It became a significant contributor to the early 21st-century boho-chic movement, influencing mainstream adoption of festival-inspired attire and vintage-style layering in contemporary fashion.
