Bonobos is a men’s apparel brand known for its emphasis on tailored fit and modern classic aesthetics. It represents a professional yet approachable subculture that prioritizes garment construction over trend-driven designs. The brand’s ethos centers on providing versatile wardrobe staples for the contemporary male consumer.
History
Founded in 2007 by Andy Dunn and Brian Spaly at Stanford University, Bonobos initially focused on solving fit issues in men’s trousers. It became an early example of the digitally native vertical brand model, transitioning from an online-only retailer to a physical presence through inventory-free showrooms called Guideshops. This approach influenced retail history by decoupling the fitting experience from immediate inventory fulfillment. In 2017, Walmart acquired the company, which was later sold to WHP Global and Express.
