Big John is a Japanese denim brand specializing in high-quality selvedge jeans and workwear. Its core aesthetic centers on classic Americana and durable craftsmanship. The brand represents the artisan subculture of Kojima, emphasizing technical precision and a commitment to traditional indigo dyeing techniques.
History
Founded in 1940 as Maruo Clothing in Kojima, the company originally manufactured uniforms. In 1965, it produced the first pair of jeans made entirely in Japan. By 1972, the brand developed the first Japanese-made denim fabric, known as the M-series. This innovation established Okayama as a global hub for premium denim production. Big John played a critical role in transitioning Japanese fashion from imported Western goods to domestically engineered heritage apparel.
