American Apparel

American Apparel is a vertically integrated clothing manufacturer known for basic, unbranded knitwear. Its aesthetic emphasizes minimalism, solid colors, and retro-inspired silhouettes. The brand represents a hipster subculture, prioritizing domestic manufacturing and a provocative, raw visual identity in its advertising.

History

Founded in 1989 by Dov Charney, the company initially focused on wholesale manufacturing before expanding into retail in 2003. It gained significance for its 'Made in USA' sweatshop-free labor model based in Los Angeles. Despite its commercial success, the brand faced numerous controversies regarding its sexualized marketing campaigns and leadership conduct. These factors, combined with financial instability, led to bankruptcy filings and its eventual acquisition by Gildan Activewear in 2017.
