ALGONQUINS is a Japanese fashion label central to the Visual Kei and punk-inflected street style subcultures. Its aesthetic combines gothic elements with punk motifs, utilizing asymmetrical silhouettes, safety pins, and lace. The brand represents a rebellious, dark alternative fashion ethos rooted in Harajuku's youth culture.
History
Established in the late 1980s by the company Arrive, ALGONQUINS became a foundational brand within the Japanese Gothic and Lolita and punk scenes. It gained significant cultural visibility through frequent features in KERA magazine, serving as a primary outfitter for musicians and fans of the Visual Kei movement. Despite its long-standing influence on Harajuku fashion history, the brand's parent company filed for bankruptcy in 2019, leading to the closure of its retail operations.
