Clothing is expression without explanation. It influences how you're seen and how you see yourself. Patterns of taste, mood, discipline, excess, and restraint repeat across time and culture. This is our guide to making that language visible.

Bloghouse

Definition

Bloghouse is a fashion aesthetic from the indie nightlife circuit of roughly 2006 to 2012, named for the dance micro-genre that MP3 blogs and MySpace spread between Paris, London, New York, and Los Angeles. The look paired Hedi Slimane's skinny silhouette with cheap party basics, including American Apparel jersey and lame leggings, ripped tights, high-top Converse, and smudged eyeliner, worn with deliberate dishevelment. Its defining medium was amateur direct-flash photography: party photographers like the Cobrasnake posted the night's pictures the next morning, so outfits were assembled to read under a point-and-shoot flash. The press revived the era under the name indie sleaze starting in 2021, after a trend-forecasting TikTok and an Instagram archive account returned the photographs to circulation.

Body Logic

The silhouette is narrow and body-conscious, inherited from Hedi Slimane's Dior Homme line, and worn by every gender at once. Clothes fit tight and small, and the body is presented mid-party: sweating, smoking, dancing, and above all posing, because the aesthetic's finish line was the next morning's party photo. Dishevelment is the styling logic rather than its failure. Eyeliner smears, tights ladder, and hair collapses across one eye, and all of it reads as intended under a direct camera flash.

Exemplars

  • The Cobrasnake (Mark Hunter)2004-2010Hunter's party-photo site documented the LA and New York circuit with direct flash and posted the pictures overnight, defining how the era saw itself. He described his subject as "cigarette smoke, a bunch of sweaty people, sticky floors, beer spilling everywhere." Rizzoli published his archive as The Cobrasnake: Y2Ks Archive in 2022, timed to the revival.
  • Misshapes2004-2008The weekly downtown Manhattan party run by Leigh Lezark, Geordon Nicol, and Greg Krelenstein, where a house photographer shot attendees against a wall and the photos circulated on blogs the next day. Madonna appeared unannounced in 2005, and Karl Lagerfeld later made Lezark a Chanel ambassador. The attendee uniform was skinny jeans, thrift finds, and American Apparel.
  • Cory Kennedy2005-2008A Los Angeles teenager whom Mark Hunter began photographing in 2005, and whose appearances on thecobrasnake.com drove measurable traffic spikes within months. Press called her the internet's first It girl, an early demonstration that a party photo stream could manufacture a fashion figure without magazines.
  • Hedi Slimane's Dior Homme2000-2007Slimane's ultra-slim tailoring set the era's silhouette for all genders. Karl Lagerfeld lost over ninety pounds to wear it, and the skinny jean it legitimized became the base garment of the entire scene. Slimane restaged the look's grunge-sleaze register at Saint Laurent from 2012.

Timeline

  • 1997-2003Erol Alkan's Monday-night party Trash ran in London from 1997, incubating electroclash and the post-punk revival. Ed Banger Records was founded in Paris in March 2003 by Daft Punk's manager Pedro Winter, building the roster (Justice, Uffie, SebastiAn) whose records the blogs would carry.
  • 2004-2005Misshapes began its weekly run in downtown Manhattan, and Mark Hunter started shooting LA parties on flash, renaming his site thecobrasnake.com after a Polaroid cease-and-desist. Hype Machine launched in April 2005 and aggregated the MP3 blogs into a chart. Cheap Monday's tight, cheap skinny jeans arrived from Stockholm.
  • 2006-2007Uffie's Pop the Glock (February 2006) went from MySpace demo to scene anthem. Klaxons' Myths of the Near Future (January 2007) won the Mercury Prize and put new rave's neon and glowsticks on high streets via Topshop. Kanye West's shutter shades in the Stronger video crossed the accessory into the mainstream.
  • 2008-2012Crystal Castles' 2008 debut carried the sound toward its harsher end while the parties peaked and faded. Trash had closed in 2007 and Misshapes wound down, and the look bled into Tumblr soft grunge as Instagram replaced the party-photo blogs that had given it a medium.
  • 2012-2016Slimane's Saint Laurent restaged the wardrobe at luxury prices, including an explicitly grunge Fall 2013 collection. American Apparel filed for bankruptcy in October 2015 and again in 2016, closing the era's supply of basics.
  • 2021-presentThe @indiesleaze Instagram archive (from January 2021) and trend forecaster Mandy Lee's October 2021 TikTok named the era indie sleaze and predicted its return. The Cobrasnake's 2022 Rizzoli book and a downtown New York wave around The Dare followed, while skeptics at Vice and Rolling Stone UK argued the revival was an echo chamber that never matched the original's reach.
