T.U.K. was founded in 1989 in London by Stephen Lewis and Sheila Lewis as a successor to the Chelsea-based footwear tradition associated with Anello & Davide and the Kings Road scene. The brand became identified with the creeper and the brothel creeper silhouette, which had earlier roots in 1940s and 1950s Teddy Boy fashion. Its designs were adopted by goth, punk, and alternative music communities during the 1990s and 2000s. The company has been recognised as a continuing link between British subcultural dress and mainstream footwear design.
