Liberty was founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty on Regent Street, London, initially selling imported Eastern textiles, silks, and decorative objects from Japan, China, and India. The firm commissioned printed fabrics from the 1880s onward, and its Liberty print became influential in the Aesthetic Movement and later in Art Nouveau fashion and interior design. The company's Tudor-style building on Great Marlborough Street, constructed partly from the timbers of decommissioned warships, has become a notable London landmark.
