The Coleman Company was founded in 1900 in Wichita, Kansas, by William Coffin Coleman, who began selling gasoline-fueled lamps. The company became a leading manufacturer of camping stoves and lanterns during the twentieth century and was closely associated with American recreational camping and the postwar growth of outdoor leisure. Its products, including the white gas lantern and portable stove, became standard equipment for generations of campers. Coleman is recognized in outdoor and consumer goods history for mass-producing portable camping equipment, though it is primarily an equipment manufacturer rather than a fashion label.
