However, gorpcore's body logic encodes class in ways that its functionality rhetoric obscures. Genuine technical outdoor gear is expensive: an Arc'teryx Alpha SV shell retails at $800+, Salomon XT-6 trail runners at $180, and a complete three-layer system (base, mid, shell) from premium brands easily exceeds $1,500. Wearing this gear in urban contexts signals disposable income for "investment dressing" and leisure time for outdoor recreation — hiking trips, ski weekends, trail-running routines. The prepared body implies a lifestyle of recreational access to wilderness, which is itself a class-structured resource. This produces the category's central paradox: democratic-appearing gear (unisex, practical, utility-forward) actually encoding privilege (expensive, leisure-dependent, access-structured).
Embodied use remains a real, if weakened, evaluative criterion. A layering system that overheats its wearer on a moderate urban walk, a shell that wets out in light rain, or trail runners that blister on a commute all fail the body-as-platform test — even if they succeed visually.
