Athleisure
Definition
Athleisure is a fashion aesthetic in which performance-oriented athletic garments serve as everyday clothing. The category includes compression leggings, tapered joggers, technical hoodies, and sneakers worn outside any athletic context. Lululemon, founded in Vancouver in 1998 (with its first store opening in 2000), helped mainstream yoga apparel as all-day wear. By the early 2010s, leggings, sports bras, and running shoes had become standard components of casual wardrobes. The aesthetic draws on technical fabrics such as moisture-wicking nylon blends, four-way stretch knits, and compression textiles. Instagram fitness culture and the broader wellness movement accelerated adoption after 2010, making athletic silhouettes a baseline for casual dress across gender lines.

Body Logic
Athleisure constructs a body-conscious silhouette through compression and stretch fabrics. Compression leggings smooth the leg line. High waistbands cinch the waist. Mesh panels and strategic cutouts add visual texture. The silhouette signals physical fitness regardless of actual activity level. Women's athleisure centers on leggings, sports bras, and cropped hoodies, while men's athleisure converges on joggers, hoodies, and technical sneakers. Both share the same fabric technologies and the same emphasis on a streamlined, body-aware fit.
