Founded in 1994 by Filipe, Beatriz, and António Vila Nova in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal, Salsa Jeans emerged from the IVN group. This innovation influenced global denim trends by shifting focus toward body-shaping properties. In 2016, the Portuguese conglomerate Sonae acquired a majority stake in the company.
