Founded in 1962 in Kitchener, Ontario, by Kaufman Footwear, Sorel originally specialized in winter work boots. The brand gained cultural significance for introducing the first cold-weather boot with a removable felt liner. Following Kaufman Footwear's bankruptcy in 2000, Columbia Sportswear acquired the brand. This transition shifted Sorel from a purely functional industrial manufacturer to a global fashion label that integrates performance technology into contemporary, year-round footwear designs.
