The brand originated from the Northamptonshire Productive Society, a workers' cooperative founded in 1881. In 1960, the factory produced the first Dr. Martens boots under license, utilizing a patented air-cushioned sole. After the licensing agreement concluded, the company rebranded its production as Solovair. It remains significant for maintaining production in England, preserving the historical construction methods associated with mid-century British youth culture and industrial workwear.
